Educational Options Newsletter
February, 2007
I was browsing through The Quote Garden to find something special to send
you for Valentine's Day. Frederick Buechner's sentiments are as valid for
this day as for every day, when he says "You can kiss your family and
friends good-bye and put miles between you, but at the same time you carry
them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach, because you do not
just live in a world but a world lives in you."
We send our best wishes to you and your family, who are a part of our world!
Sincerely, Kathy Hara, Editor

More Television Game Shows
We recently sent out information about the game show 1 vs. 100 looking
for gifted children to appear on that show. We have since heard that at
least one young girl from the Twin Cities area passed the auditions and
subsequently did very well on the show, winning quite a bit of money.
Now we hear that CBS Television is looking for academically accelerated and
gifted children nationwide to participate in a new kids game show. They are
targeting well-rounded children of diverse backgrounds with unique interests.
Their purpose is to celebrate young people and education by making role models
out of kids who are working hard to fulfill their educational goals.
From geography to history to movies, the kids will defend their intellectual
capital against adult challengers, combining their academic talents to challenge
the adult and send him or her packing. The kids are a recurring home team cast
that stay with the show week to week, allowing the viewers to get to know them.
This is a game show for your children to highlight their academic achievements
along with their hobbies and other special interests, as well as to earn money
towards their future educations!
Please feel free to contact Carrie Mebane

casting department at 1-800-891-1738 or

any questions that you may have regarding your child's participation.

Job Opportunities: Working with the Gifted
Are you interested in making a positive difference in the lives of young
people via e-mail and telephone consultations with parents? Does the idea of
working in Reno appeal to you? If so, consider the following . . .
The Davidson Institute is looking for people with degrees in social work,
education, communications, or human development/services to work as Assistant
Family Consultants, with the possibility of being promoted to Family Consultant
status. Assistant Family Consultants work with the Institute's Family Consultant
Team to provide long-distance, ongoing, intensive direct and indirect support to
profoundly intelligent young people and their parents.
These positions are based in Davidson Institute's Reno office, therefore
prospective candidates would need to move to Reno if they are offered and accept
a position.
For more information contact Jill S. R. Adrian, Director of Family Services,
at jadrian@ditd.org.

Parent Support
If you've got a question pertaining to your gifted child, help is no farther
away than your computer. The BrightKids Listserv is a discussion group for
parents, guardians and others interested in raising and educating bright
children. While hosted by American Mensa, this elist is open to the public.

Math Whizzes
David Lubinski and Camilla Persson Benbow of Vanderbilt University have
written a review of their Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, which
included 5,000 participants over 35 years. The study "has devoted particular
attention to uncovering personal antecedents necessary for the development of
exceptional math-science careers and to developing educational interventions to
facilitate learning among intellectually precocious youth."

The College Search
Many of you in our reading audience have kids who are beginning to look
towards their college educations. Perhaps they’re interested in starting
college early, or they want to know if they should take the ACT or the SAT,
or they simply want to know which college is best for them.
The Davidson Institute has put together a web page listing sites and
articles that may help make this search easier, all geared toward bright
students.

Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a
